Does NO ONE understand the dog world! I mean GOD! If you shout "NO", what does it sound like! A dog barking! The best way is not to punish but reward! I destract the dog from barking by a toy or treat and say "quiet" Then play a game with the toy or give the treat once it is quiet. Therefore, the dog is quiet,it learns how to be quiet and it gets a game after. After a while you will not need toy and the dog will be silent on command. SIMPLE!

It would prove his abilities. Besides, it does not take long to get a dog to stop barking if trained correctly. A couple of minutes at best (if that long) - all he has to do is get the dog to stop and say "That's how you do it!", not create a perfect obedience animal for us.

My sister has a collie that is a niightmare half the time. Everytime I go see her I take her out and run for 15 minutes around the neighborhood (after she does her business) and then she is like putty. Collies are used to herding sheep around in circles in a farm field so they are bred to have energy ALL day. My sis' collie loves running and is a totally diff dog afterwards

So then they'll be 2 collies bitting people, great advise! 41kahn1 - Maybe you should take him to training classes and then carry out what they tell you consitantly. Sound like you dog is very frustrated, collies need lots of excercise, mentally and physically otherwise they get bored and start chasing cars and doing other dangerous things; you have already seen this started. Teaching basic commands will give him something to think about. Practice sit, stay, heel, etc at home and on your walks.

Try taking some of your pet's favorite treats. While she's playing at the park periodically call her to you and give her a treat. If she finds food and ignores you go up to her and lure her away with her favorite treat. When she gets into someting she's not supposed to say NO then give her a treat and say good girl. Hopefully by distracting her with her favorite treats she'll forget all about that other stuff. good luck!

Heya, I got a question, I got a 6 month old border collie puppy and my family and I have a number of problems with him. First of all, when he go on walks he doesnt't walk beside me and pulls a lot, also if there are cars nearby he lies down and tries to chase them. Also, sometimes my mom lets him out of the house and he runs around wild, when I try get him he just keeps running from me and doesn't obey anything I say, Yesterday he found another puppy and fought it, then bit the owner. I think at times the puppy doesn't understand what is going on. I know that mine was very confused by the leash the first few times I used it on her. Just be patient and be encouraging. I just left the leash on my puppy and walked off and eventually she followed with some coaxing. Then the next step I held on the leash and walked as far as i could and waited for her to come. After a bit curiosity got the better of her and she followed me everywhere...my dog is a boxer though.

don't let him keep walking when he pulls. Just stop walking when he pulls, and ignore him until he stops pulling. Or, if he pulls, stop and turn around and walk back the other direction. He will start to understand that when he pulls, it gets the the opposite of what he wants.

Through-out the day constantly grab the leash but don't let her out. Right now the leash means outside. If your picking up the leash all the times it doesn't mean that anymore.

ok this bloke may be a bit of a dick but what he`s saying makes a lot of sense. it could also make your dog a lot less likely to attack kids. a lot of dogs get stressed out with kids poking and grabbing at them. so if your dog is well used to actions like that. its going to be less likely to get stressed and lash out. i for one would rather do this than face a parent who's child my dog attacked.

Excellent video. I do something very similar. I say, "Let daddy see" and she will be passive an let me do anything with her ... BUT she won't do it for the vet. At the vet she's still very excited. We're still working on that, but I feel confident that she'll figure it out. Anyway, I think your video is excellent and cover the basic idea. I suspect most people will not realize how simple that part is.

Lol, well the handler seems to have gotten mad (I would too if my dog bit me by mistake), so yes he smacked the dog and gave it a correction. You can see afterwards how the dog enters a submissive position and the handler places his leg over his dog to claim space and be dominant. From what I could tell, the dogs that these guys train probably recieve minimal corrections because these guys know what they're doing.

Hey Ratman don't be so quick to judge because these dogs are trained professionals and him swinging the dog in the air while shouting an "off" comand was a way to get the dog's attention. When dogs are trained to attack like that they tend to not smell before they bite, so a handler could get bitten.

Thanks SO much for these videos! We adopted a dog today from the SPCA, and I need them! Though our dog is very well-behaved, I still have a lot to learn, as I have only had cats. (PS - I very much recommend adopting a dog, as opposed to a puppy! She was already well-house-trained, and we knew exactly what her personality was like, since we walked her and spoke with the volunteers about her, etc. It has been easy. And there are so many dogs in need of a home.)

This was informative. I've been trying the same kind of thing with my Jack Russell. I live in Tokyo, so things are a bit different. Dogs must be on a leash at all times, so that's not a problem. My problem is that she will usually wait till she's outside before she 'goes', but if she can't hold it, she'll go on the floor inside, whereas she used to automatically go to the toilet sheet. Basically, she used to be house trained until she learned to go outside. Now I have to retrain her.

awesome! i already did it like that with my dog but i always praise him while hes doing it... so now he doesnt do it on command he just stares at me while doing it as to say... buddy... gimme that cookie. another thing is, my dog always runs to the end of the leash and comes back to return position when he hits the end of it... so im gonna have to work my timing i guess.

I have a yorkie that pulls until he chokes himself. He is 2 yrs old and i have tried to stop it by changing directions and saying 'lets go' everytime i do but then he pulls again whenever i turn back. I've tried something like this before but my dog just decides to pull in any direction I lead her mind you she is an Alaskan Malamute a dog made to pull. She is also a show dog and walks great in the ring once she calms down but still needs corrections now and then. But on normal walks I've had to get her to pull a tire to slow her down, it's only 15 to 20 pounds nothing major and she loves it

I think that's just confidence in her surroundings. My border collie is 4 months old, but we didn't start walking her until after 2.5 months after all her injections and she hadn't ventured outside of the garden. That was her territory and as soon as you took her away from that familiarity she stayed behind when walking because she wanted to go back into her domain. It's not an issue you can force but I think as she gets older over the next couple of months she'll be more confident on walks.

you have to love the dog for who it is. I adopted a walker hound pointer mix that is fast as anything and moves like barry sanders, but he has no inclination to chase the disc. You are an amazing trainer. This video goes to heart with me. The best dog I have ever met was an ACD mix. He was euthanized by the CT Humane Society last year. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about him. I wish like hell I had taken him home when I had the chance. Also, When I pick out my pups, I do not go to the pups, I stay back and observe them first. I usually pick the one that is out on his own, usually the first one to the food bowl etc. You can't tell anything about a dog when you don't obseve them from afar.

Thanks! Wow, that's a big topic, but make sure you research the breed first to be sure it's a good match for you; they are tough cookies. Then research for great breeders who test for PRA/hip dysplasia, make SURE the pups are very well socialized!! Also, don't forget to check rescue, sometimes pups are available. I have never raised a hand or my voice at any of the 200+ animals on my farm for the 15 years I have been running one including horses, cows, dogs and cats. Great question! I always teach dog owners to keep the tug toy when they are done playing. The tug toy is the one toy that you want to keep in your possesion. At the end of the game the tug toy gets put away. I would toss a different toy to your dog. Best, Eric

I have tried EVERYTHING to get my 1 year old Pit/Beagle mix to stop jumping, but when my mom and I are being strict with her she runs to my step dad and he allows her to jump all over him! We have been through 3 trainers and nothing is helping(because she is confused), and she has started to add little nips in as well. I'm going to try this and if it doesn't work, then I guess it's time for yet another trainer. Thank You.

First, teach your dog the stay command. You can say stay all you want, but if he doesnt know what it means then he's not goin to do it. To do this, place the dog at your heel then give him a firm stay command and walk away. He will follow you the first few times. When this happens either give him a verbal ''no'' or say nothing and also bring him back to the exact position you started in walking him by his collar and repeat. saying nothing (ignoring) the dog is the same as saying your mad.

Also take in mind that the dog may think that if he jumps then gets down that he gets praise, so he may in fact jump on someone just to get off and recieve the treat or praise. In some circumstances. This method can increase the level of jumping. Most methods of training have drawbacks possible. Another method is to teach your dog to sit when he comes up to you. This could extinct jumping all together. Just remember there are many ways to train the same thing. Chose whats best for you

this is terrible advice and eric would absolutely not agree with it. there is no reason to "punish" your dog. just because a human thinks something is unacceptable doesn't mean the dog will understand this. if you mean to solve any problem and build a loving, trusting relationship with your dog, find a positive trainer (like eric) who can "translate" for you and help you and your dog speak the same language so that you can reach your goals and live harmoniously. best of luck!
