Space Based Solar Power - Alternative Energy Solution Posted by: bagtaggar
Video duration: 269 seconds FACT: There aren't enough resources on this planet to sustain continued human growth and increasing quality of life. FACT: If we want to avoid catastrophic war, suffering, and global shortages of energy, we need to start looking to space seriously for solutions. Space Based Solar Power is the first step. These materials can be hauled up using cheap launch technologies offered by companies like SpaceX. There are many proposals for how to pull this off, and as for fossil fuels, every energy solution requires an initial cost, even wind power. Also, rockets do not run on fossil fuels.
By: Funk0001. on 24 Nov 08, 05:06:13
Love the idea... but how do you plan on getting that all up there? rockets needing massive amounts of fossil fuels? to that, what do you think the production and transportation of this works?... it's not going to move itself, you need trucks, boats, planes or trains for that... your theory doesn't work, it's too ideallistic, unrealistic

Nice video, nice sound. Reflect the truth world.
By: rockafeladave. on 20 Nov 08, 22:17:51
transparency maybe, like the adaptive camouflage that is being developed by the US army. It may be easier to just put energy collectors on the moon, or power plants under it's surface and then microwave beam that energy to receivers on earth.
By: Palmstream. on 20 Nov 08, 12:54:21
Talk about overkill! All we need is a kilometer-wide band in geo to handle all of our clean energy needs on the ground. Besides, I'm sure astronomers would rather see stars and galaxies out there at night than advertising.

isn't a dyson sphere just a better version of this idea.

u wana know what i think?? :) Well i thinkn that all of thiz stuff iz suposed 2 happen i mean wat if itz our time?? :*( If it iz thrn the worlds cycle will just continue after we are all dead and then start from scratch NOT by god but by nature and bactiera and many other thind!!!! i just hope that diz world ( especually america) will see what they r doing :( ?
By: inuyashaghydj. on 14 Nov 08, 04:56:42
omg watching thiz video made me realize that ower gov iznt doing anything about it and it gives me hope 4 the future OBAMA :) omg i just had 2 do that but i really did pour my heart out into thiz comment :)

OK It seems I can't reply to replys so here is my comment for this clip... brilliant idea. Peeps on Earth R complaining that cheap solar solutions can't track the sun... OK prob eliminated... Yes Power can be transmitted! The point is finding 'pollution free' solutions people... and this looks like one! But! I also believe it can be done on Earth too!
By: RockManAU. on 09 Nov 08, 14:42:19
So well said (Gee I hope this comment goes where it's supposed to go this time!)
By: RockManAU. on 09 Nov 08, 14:39:42
Just like Tesla suggested... Brilliant Idea!
By: Palmstream. on 08 Nov 08, 19:37:38
Yes I know.

Obama's National Space Council should review SSP in short order, so that an announcement can be made by spring 2009. NASA, DOE, and DOD have already reviewed. The announcement itself is the mother duck behind which all others align. More tests? Sure. Do all the tests and demos you want. I suggest we need to fire up a helluva more than a single light bulb from space to show SSP's onions.
By: adammy3. on 02 Nov 08, 14:42:15
Saddly america is in so much debt at the momment i doubt even the president can help This would require every country every person on this planet chipping in to help
By: Palmstream. on 31 Oct 08, 14:53:03
This idea (SSP) overhauls civilization and overrides the perfect storm of global crises that brews and stews us at this time. It is the solution to policy decisions in energy, economics, space, enviroment, education, security, technology, and conflict mitigation. It gives the economies of the world something to do together and gives rising nations a leg up towards their development. SSP requires a singular man to make it happen. That man is the President of the United States.
By: adammy3. on 30 Oct 08, 22:22:26
i will doubt this idea will ever happen in the current global crisis that is going on at the momment
By: LarryCarstairs. on 28 Oct 08, 09:39:10
mm. Looks cool. Though I have my doubts about the figures cited at the beginning of the clip. The potential of geothermal energy alone is breathtaking. Maybe if the population continues to expand at an exponential rate from now until 2100 some of those predictions will come true, but that is unlikely to happen unless we solve the energy crisis first.
By: adammy3. on 27 Oct 08, 18:09:32
when i said about the population i was responding to an idiot who talked about killing 90% of the population i would never suggest that idea and tottaly support this idea
By: gweegwee3. on 24 Oct 08, 20:07:59
:) I was just going to ask the same thing, how we get the energy to use, but since they already know a way, well, its a very viable solution to a problem everyone knows is going to happen. 1 last question, whats the song? Love the womans voice.
By: jim0watkins. on 23 Oct 08, 03:13:20
the tests have been done, there's no harm to the ozone layer, all other kinks are being worked on as we speak, and besides, every single breakthrough technology in history came with its dangers, but the benefits crush them like the fat lady sitting on an ant
By: Palmstream. on 21 Oct 08, 15:16:22
From the comments here, looks like education is a never ending struggle. SSP is a 40-year old story, and brainwashed minds don't get it. Let's put a pro-education, pro-empirical science Administration back in the pilot seat.
By: adammy3. on 16 Oct 08, 13:50:06
Yeah kill 90% of the population how about we start with you?
By: bagtaggar. on 14 Oct 08, 15:54:33
Man, I really wish people would do the follow up research suggested at the end of the video... The power is beamed down via microwaves and picked up by receivers on Earth. No, this is not a joke, it's a very real proposal for energy.
By: lcampbell00. on 14 Oct 08, 07:02:43
I thought this was a joke. sure, you can generate energy in space via solar power. but how do you transfer the power the few hundred kilometers down to earth where we need it? oh i know lets just move into space, pfft. or lets get some few hundred kilometer chord which connects the solar plants in space to connect to earth while in orbit Lets release some virus, Or some war 'over' the resources to half the world population. that will lower the worlds demand for electricity:P
By: bagtaggar. on 14 Oct 08, 05:22:06
Microwaves don't cause cancer, and at 2.5 GHz they don't even ionize air (operating frequency of SSP). The numbers in the video assume that by 2100 Americans will be using a third of the power they are using now. The point is, we need energy, and lots of it, no matter how well behaved we are.
