Congratulations to Denzel on this award. In my opinion, he should have also won hands down for his brilliant portrayal of Malcom X. His performance and commitment to the character actually made me forget I was watching a movie and think that I was looking at Malcom X himself! Denzel Washington is without a doubt one of the finest actors of this generation if not one of the finest of all times. And yes, every now and then I'll still pop in the DVD, "Mo Betta Blues" one of my all time favorites!!!

This is definitely not a racist movie. Maybe James Stewart was to a certain extent racist or hardcore republican (though the evidence seems pretty mediocre at best about any racism), but that does not make this movie racist or fascist! In fact, this film is all about individual freedom in a democracy and shows, though exaggeration, how a democracy might work to solve its own problems.

I'm a person of color and I disagree. The movie talks about the emancipation of African Americans from slavery (Smith's first visit to the Lincoln Memorial) and one of the kids on Smith's hometown newspaper staff was African American. People see the prejudices they want to see. I see a movie that included African Americans in it and did not ignore them. The valets who were carrying the bags got the last laugh by ditching his bags. They were the smartest people in that scene.

Politicians probably avoid making references to this film for the very reason they're scared they'll be too transparent in the eyes of the American public; their political opponents could counter any self-serving allusions to "Mr Smith" with OTHER "Smith" references that would blow 'em out of the water! All in all, definitely NOT the most politically savvy thing to do, because "Mr Smith" cuts BOTH ways, like a two-edged sword.

I don't know that socialism re: JohnHess65's last comment is what's being advanced, but there is an admirably benign liberal flair to this picture, despite the fact that both Stewart and Capra were G.O.P. Well, specifically I'm in favor of making taxes a flat percentage of one's income (Say for arguement's sake 10% of your total income no matter what it is) and puting a universal sales tax on everything except food; sort of what things are like here in California. And, yes I am quite aware that there's no such thing as a free lunch.
