Quality film. Baldwin plays this part and scene very well, considering he's not the best of actors. But Jack Lemon as Shelley "The Machine" Lavene is undoubtedly the best character of them all in this film.

Great scene. Mamet actually isolated Baldwin from the rest of the cast so what you see is the first time spent with them. He did this for effect. Apparently Baldwin was self concious around such legendary talent & he believed that they were talking behind his back about what a pretender he was. (which wasn't true) The result is a remarkable performance.

Well, no. Most decent keyboards allow you to modify how much the velocity effects the amplification, and you can just set it to 0. Simple keyboards have it at the touch of a button. Even simpler keyboards don't have velocity sensitive keys.

I know what you meant, in the digital pianos/synths I have used (with weighted keys) which are newer (within the last few years at least) they've all had that option, meaning all the notes played (regardless of how hard) sound at the same volume. It's awesomely good for lead stuff, but kills off the dynamic completely =P

that's not what I meant: Some keyboards have weighted keys: just as with a regular piano. If the keys are weighted, you need to put more force behind your fingers, to get the louder notes.

with most decent keyboards you have the option of turning off touch sensitivity at the touch of a button, meaning that he wouldn't need to press hard on each key to get a full sound, he'd just need to depress it a little. having said that, his technique is insane, I'd imagine he'd make it work regardless. =P

I SURE hope you're trolling, because MMA is FAR from being easy, it's one of the hardest Martial Arts training there is with Kyokushin Karate and Thai and kick Boxing. If you'd watch more closely, you'd see that MMA fighters aren't clumsy at all, all of their moves are controlled. This acrobatic feat does NOTHING in a fight...MMA is ALL about fighting...so...which one is best in a fight?

It is an insult to Pavarotti's memory to even suggest that this guy will become the "new Pavarotti" At 26,and only with 4 years of training Pavarotti had evrything,including the most beautiful volor ever heard. If he is lucky he might become adecent dinger,nothing else.

Jeez come on.. all those of you comparing him to Pavarotti.. grow up.. hes nowhere near.. not yet at least. Once Paul has been at this for 20+ years we can look back and talk about that comparison. Then again: as far as some regular ears go, i do think the guy's voice is pretty much near perfect. Sure if you do singing for a living, then you might be able to point out some flaws in his technique. But 99.9% of the listeners will not notice that and even less will actually care.

he may not have the breathing, legato or phrasing perfect but it is a gd performance. and thats the point of the show, he has had absolutely no vocal training before he went up for that show. you can see that by the fact that he still needs a mic to sing. he was a nobody and now he is somebody that's what the show is all about. he has a voice I'm positive that in a few yrs to come he will be the new Pavarotti. wait and see

doh... Paul is not anymore, maybe the opera elite who don't accept that cannot sing opera unless you have been through the conservatories like just about all did, but in Germany he sang to quarter million total screaming encore. Paul hit high Cs everytime and now his voice is not amatuer like when he sang here, and I think incredible when amatuer.

music is so special more of the brain is devoted to music than speech and thats a fact. thats why different forms of music stretch right back in time.sorry for being boring and yes paul potts is disliked by the opera people. but screw them he sounds brill and you can understand what he sings

I saw this show twice. I think LuPone is brilliant. The ensemble was terrific. I think the best production of this show ever to hit B'way. The one thing that struck me though during the Tony Awards, each person from the Gypsy ensemble who won forgot to thank the one person who made this all possible.. Gypsy Rose Lee. Without her autobiography, there would be nothing. Please remember the person who made this all possible. Thank you Gypsy Rose Lee.
