Amazing and very cute! However it tends to lose its lustre when you consider: the use of key words to trigger a reaction learned by rote; and withholding food as a bribe. Birds are extremely intelligent though. Note the recent case of a Quaker Parakeet that warned the owner about her choking baby by getting all flustered and shouting "Baby! Baby!" At Arthur's Pass past the Acquaduct last Saturday during a storm I pulled up to take some photos and one of these birds came up to me and gave me an 18kt gold earring! Obviously stolen from someone else! It flew in when I pulled up with my car and dropped it at my feet and I have a photo to prove it. I am now wearing it. This is a great video thanks for posting I spend a lot of time with kea and they are wonderfull until they shred your tent/slings/boots/pack even then I still have fond spot for these half kilo gorrilas with a beak. A shame it now appears the New Zealand governments department of conservation has accidentally poisoned close to the entire population of them in New Zealand only 5000 left.

I heard he plucked out his feathers when Dr. Pepperberg left him to go on a long trip and he was stressed because she was gone. That makes sense because parrots become very bonded to one person.

obviously stressed,parrots live a lot longer in the wild and he had been plucking his feathers poor thing, animal exploitation, hideous, on par with a chimp wearing clothes. i watch wildlife documentaries and see film of these birds in the wild flying in flocks over the amazon rain forest then to see this shocking.

He looks pretty happy when hes eating the corn ...and any creature that has to satop and think STOPS AND THINKS...pause-answer...not freeze, you are seeing things. and if it was plucking-smart creatures tend to be neurotic/compulsive habits.dogs do this too. they chew themselves or have seperation anxiety. some birds pluck from habit and only an elizabethan collar helps...

hi! I've raised greys for 3 years in a pet center. You're right: birds like structure but can you explain to me why he was plucking himself? A relaxed african grey doesn't freeze all the time like ALex did when asked to speak.

probably genetic.CAGs dont live long in the wild (40yrs-ish),longer in captivity but its not written in stone they WILL live to be 70yrs.He had an interesting,stimulating life. Birds r like kids-u dont spoil ur kids, you dont spoil ur pets.I had a grey.Alex was a lucky bird who did alot in 31yrs.they NEED interction or they will feather-pluck.he had great feathering(except moulting)so u cant say he was stressed-he never showed signs of stress-birds dont hide stress as well as they hide sickness

force? he spoke on his own...what FORCE-is she a Jedi? CAG's LOVVVVE to be spoken to, to speak, to play,to do triks...they are one of the most interactive birds around. I had a CAG for 14 years...Alex was in Congo African Grey Paradise (for a captive bred) and making him finish one chore more will not kill him!! geeze ppl, have u ever owned animals? do u not know their psychology?they like structure, birds especially. So he 'worked' for his toys,food & playroom-He had it good & loved them back

alex is finally happy: he doesn't have to force talk... does she have a PhD or does she thinks she's a researcher simply because she forces alex to count, talk...and be a good boy? Kinda sad.
