If Gore had won that election, most of the area of this country would have had no representation in the white house. That includes the industries that are unique to those areas. No, unfortunately, nationalizing banks is terrible, it's actually not wealth redistribution, it's state communism. Socialism isn't bad, the definition being "when the means of production are in the hands of those who do the producing" an example, a factory co-owned by every worker on the floor. But Ownership by the state is a bad bad thing, that is dictatorship, national communism, and very bad, because it leads to a planned economy which limits growth.

'religious folk' - your assuming a lot. We've never met, and I haven't said a lot about religion at all. 'altruism is subjective' - better said it is diverse. Even Hitchens and Boteach are able to maintain some basic moral congruity: human dignity, the immorality of the holocaust, love for truth, etc. Otherwise this debate would be impossible. If morality is a construct, why is not your evaluation of morality as a construct a construct? You will end up with determinism down that route.

Morality is entirely subjective. it is developed in the first years of our life, or our primary socialization. Civilizations who have never heard of Jesus or the Bible have altruistic values. On another hand children who grow up in isolation typically do not have any sense of morality, therefore it is not inert.
