I think there's a problem with thinking there was an "opportunity" that presented itself for success. The reason they had mild success (VERY mild. Reality is most people have never heard of them in the mainstream) on this album is the culmination of relentless touring and a strong fanbase. The RISK they took was in stretching themselves musically and potentially turning out an album that they loved but NO ONE but diehard fans would buy. Most of the album is NOT mainstream friendly AT ALL.
