Started listening to XTC in 8th or 9th grade (1987). I have a been a fan since, and the older stuff is great. Too bad not more have heard of them, since they are better than an infinite# of bands since. Doing the 80s post-punk thing again now, so I would love to hear a cover of these guys from some up & coming band. I would respect them more.

its all in the wrist. get the string right in the middle of the bow and relax. start slow and work up to it. it only took me a few days to get up to speed. its the stamina to play the whole damn song and then the all the scales at about 1:03 lol the one guy is wearing huge sun glasses on the cello

You can see Nigel has a high IQ. He "sees" situations and acts to that. Avoiding collisions others would have had. Sadly the FIA had something against him, black flagging him all the time in situations in which Senna wouldn't be black flagged. Senna and Schumacher might be better than Nigel but they had their successes by always cheating and being assholes. If Senna couldn't win he would just drive the other off. Nigel rules, always fair.

He was my master professor in Innsbruck -2000 . What an amazing experience ! Best time of my life . I remember also after around 2 years ,in an evening I watched an opera by Purcell on Mezzo ; I didn't catch the beginning but in seconds I was attracted by the astonishing skill of the lutenist from the ensemble . I couldn't see who it was because the orchestra was "under "the stage , so I decided to watch until the end , captivated by the sound of lute , to see the names. Guess who ?

Absolutely! I just saw him together with The Polish Chamber Orcestra, on TV though! He has more true qualitys than any other artist i know. He is emotional, passioned, charming and have a marvelous contact with the audience -and the orcestra, even makes small "air-kisses" to the ladies if the melody is right. His technique is the best, I think. Sometimes the notes are even "out of order", just to glide into "perfect" tones.. He playes with more feelings than any other i know of :)

BWV = Bach Werk Verzeichnis (Back Work Catalogue), an index of Bach's works, compiled in the mid-20th Century by Wolfgang Schmieder. More than a thousand works are catalogued. This piece "Erbarme dich, mein Gott" ("Have mercy, God") is an aria from BWV244, the "St Matthew Passion". The original is a "duet" between a plaintive violin melody (here played almost as Bach wrote it) and a related vocal line sung by an alto, which is here largely given to the oboe.

Mansell isn't a naive pansy. He knew exactly what to expect on camera with Jeremy, and he doesn't need protecting either way. He's not the sort of person that would be offended if you treated him like a normal bloke, because that's what he is (at least in a social context, on track...) You're also naive if you think this is the first and only time they talked during the filming of this episode. It's banter, it's Jeremy, don't take it so seriously. Mansell is my sporting hero, I'm not offended.

I saw/heard Kroke in berlin when they played in Germany for the 1. time. It was outstanding. I don't think they need prominent support like Kennedy. Of course Kennedy plays brilliant. He seems not to have sensibility for Klezmer music and the style it is played, though.

What are you talking about!!!?!?! He gets a brighter tone than most because of his technique, a hand position for which there is much iconagraphic evidence. He sometimes uses nylgut instead of gut so maybe this is what you're hearing. But he certainly plays an historical lute. Lute soundboards are traditionally made of spruce, which is what his lute has!

I disagree. Though the lute certainly has more overtones (a gazillion strings), I would say as a whole it's sound it far brighter than a classical guitar. This is one of the reasons why a lute generally sounds TERRIBLE in equal temperament and a guitar is acceptable. Think of the difference between a harpsichord and a piano. The piano is very muddy (comparatively) so to most ears it works in equal temperament. Harpsichords, like lutes, are painful unless tuned historically.

Beautiful, superb, classical playing! I wish I could play so well. However, his lute sounds more like a classical guitar than a lute, because its sound is too bright & clear. Lutes have overtones which make them distinguishable to the bright & clear sound of classical guitars. A lute's soundboard is traditionally made of a soft wood whereas the one Nigel North is playing in the video sounds like it's made of a type of wood that's too stiff for a lute.

I am not a lute player, I am a flute player! I went to IU, graduated from the EMI, and had many classes and chamber music coaching with Nigel. I do have to say that everything that he does is so meticulously thought out. What ever someone may come up with he has tried it. Then he sets his mind on what he wants to convey he does. I think that he is one of the greatest musicians at IU. If you get to study with him or hear him live, do!

I wouldn't be so quick to call what we're seeing here "thumb out". There are certainly treble scale sections played with the i and m fingers, and with the thumb reserved for bass notes; but there are also extended sections (try 2:48) that are clearly played thumb under. With this in mind, I think a better way to characterize the technique we're seeing here is not as that of a guitarist imposing thumb out guitar technique on the lute, as some here seem to be suggesting, but as...

Which makes sense to do, I think--especially given Dowland's comment with the move to 10-course instruments (as thereby more complex bass-string writing), which lends NN a bit of Renaissance orthodoxy to back up his decision.
