It is dumb, but only because the people who were drilling ought to have checked if there were hazards beneath; clearly that didn't happen here. After all, the diameter of the drill bit was only 14", the odds of drilling into a mine are pretty astronomical. This is an ecological disaster; these seem pretty common these days, like the Great Pacific Landfill for example.

Knowing that the Gulf of Mexico contains salt water (ocean), and the lake now contains water from the ocean,leads me to believe this is why the wateris salty.

We have some, and determining how much influence any action we take will have is very difficult, like the idea in Chaos theory that a butterfly's takeoff in Colorado might be all the difference between a hurricane in the Gulf or not.
