Dangerous Experiment Posted by: xapplimatic

microwave radiation has nothing to do with power lines

Congress has outlawed those things you know.
By: opentailgate. on 12 Jan 08, 05:13:14
its not radiation from the "magna"tron in the microwave, Its actually magnetic induction that heats the element in the incandescent bulb and excites the phosphor in the fluorescent tube. Don't worry your not being cooked. Tell every one a real electical tech. told you so.
By: opentailgate. on 12 Jan 08, 05:00:17
its not radiation doing it its magnetic induction

Actually went out and did this experiment for Chem. 121. It isn't very dangerous, just really sweet to do.
By: ttsupraman1. on 29 Dec 07, 11:17:14
ya.. this is why u don't wanna live near powerlines, nor gas station's some say they cause cancer from radiation
By: synthpop88. on 24 Dec 07, 09:00:56
Just because the field is there doesn't mean that it's going to hurt. First of all, it's easier to make the fluorescent tube light up than make the incandescent one light up, which I'm assuming is why he didn't use an incandescent one for the power lines (cool trick I must say, though). Second, the frequency of a power line in the US is 60Hz, far lower than the 2.4GHz frequency used to excite water molecules in a microwave. Still, great video!!:) thanks!
By: EDWARDOS20. on 21 Dec 07, 18:43:22
There is a magnetic field induced from the power lines. thats what creates it
By: tlovoi11. on 20 Dec 07, 09:08:32
power lines dangerous...? oh my god u better move out of the city. the wilderness is safe though. just bring a compass. ever wonder how a compass works? hmm, something to do with magnetic field lines and oh my god. the earth is a giant magnet. electromagnetic radiation is everywhere...? oh what should i do. i have to get off this planet!

put a egg inside and see what hapends..
By: kevass007. on 07 Dec 07, 20:44:27
no this is an example of propagating electronic and magnetic waves, its creating a current in the bulbs lighting them the same way as when you plug them in. hes not being microvaved because thats a totally different wavelenth of energy
By: rkodvl. on 06 Dec 07, 18:14:33
amazing
By: marymactavish. on 27 Nov 07, 17:08:26
Or steamed, sort of. The water in the food is excited, that heats the food.

that was so crazyyy =P?¡¡¡¡¡¡
By: iskador. on 13 Nov 07, 22:15:16
i think u should b ok cause microwaves are relativle safe if there not contained and raflecting off the sides of an enclosure(the microwave oven) i think the bulb lit up only because the rays were exciting the electrons in the phospher and mucury the uv from the light may actuly b more dangerus (probobly not)
By: otivaeey. on 12 Nov 07, 10:09:45
are these experiments dangerous? aren't they common? but hazardous if exposed to the em waves and ions
By: FilmPA. on 12 Nov 07, 05:46:26
Ok. This guy did it totally WRONG!!!! You need to put Gasoline into the cup first, (half full) THEN put the light bulb in. THEN microwave.

Your talking about different types of radiation. 1 Microwave ovens use non-ionizing radiation in the microwave band hence the name. They dont cause cancer. 2 the radiation coming off the power lines is EM radiation again its non-ionizing and there is no evidence that it causes cancer even in higher doses however some studies say yes it has never been proven. The kind of radiation that causes cancer is ionizing radiation the kind in the Xray and gamma bands the extreme high end of the spectrum.
