It's more about tactic than weapons. If you are an escrimador and know the basic kendo hits (which are a direct swing on the forehead or a thrust in the eyes I think), you have quite an advantage because Filipino martial arts contain so many effective counters to each specific angle. And if you can use that knowledge the kendo guy is screwed because his blade is so long he can't counter close range, which is something an escrimador is happy to do.

The purpose of kendo, and--to my way of thinking, other martial WAYS--is to develop the whole person physically, mentally, and spiritually. If two people are just going to fight, there are thousands of factors that can determine who will "win". These two martial artists both demonstrated skill and talent, but this was essentially "play". But had they both used bladed weapons with no armor, to my eye no contest. Kendoka OWNED.

I currently do not practice Escrima myself but hope to start soon. Im really not interested in full contact stick fighting the way the "Dog brothers" teach it is with very little armor only the face and hands are protected. As a result the injuries can be devestating. The tournaments are fun to watch but not the safest endeavor for your health! Learning Escrima for self defense purposes is more ideal for me. Im more into self defense/combat MA's then tournament or competition styles.

(cont) what would be killer blows with a live blade before the Escrimador can even react. Im not speaking badly about Escrima its a great MA that I happen to really like as much as I do Kendo. I see my second comment for some reason did not get posted?? I understand exactly were Kendo came from and why it was created. If you are assuming that it is impossible to fight with a real katana the way a Kendoka does with a Shinai you are only partially right. Although slower because the difference in weight, the moves are still very possible with a live blade. Regardless the Kendoka in this vid is by far more skilled then the Escrimador which is the biggest reason why he is scoring

Heia Parr, sorry, but you´re wrong - Kendo was always a sport, very limited and never ment to simulate a katana fight. As Kendo practisioners always use Shinais (Bokken for Nihon Kendo Kata only) the sparring as seen makes sence. The challenge is the unmatched paring and the different moves one have to do - on both sites. Pls keep in mind, it´s never the weapon, doing the difference - it´s always the man behind it.

I dont know if people who are commenting on this realize that Kendo vs Escrima is not really a fair match up unless the Escrimador fights using the two short swords/daggers instead of the sticks. Kendo comes out of fighting with a real Katana! In ancient times that would be the only way that a real fight between the 2 MA's would ever be even remotely fair. Escrima was a fighting method concentrating on fast attacks and brutal counter attacks, so this video is flawed in that the person using Escrima sometimes blocks without following up. he almost never attacked meaning if either of the contestants fought a real Escrimnator they would have died very very quickly.

In an actuall fight, yeah that would be the case. Escrima teaches you to try and completely beat your opponent in one assault if possible. But this is just a demonstration and they seem to be operating on a scoring system so they're both going for one hit at a time

A friend once found some videos on Xingyiquan short stick - I was shocked and delighted to see the overwhelming similarities of the two arts. While I agree with 'DreamyEyedChild' that Xingyi has a deeper teaching methodology for internal awareness, alignment, coordination etc. all one has to do is look at footage of GM Angel Cabales to see many Xingyi concepts. The energies are near identical between the Chicken/Rooster and GM Angel's expression of Serrada.

I noticed a hesitation after the initial strike on all but two of the encounters, almost a pause. 1...2,3,4,5 kind of rhythm instead of 12345. Otherwise the hand techniques are crispy and precise. I would watch that the footwork maintains the triangular shape of the classic training, even exaggerating the follow up knee. Such a wide stance could be costly if the knee doesn't anticipate counter-strike. Cheers!

Greetings! Good Serrada! Are you also a practitioner of Hsing-I chuaun(Qing Yi Quan)? I practice both Serrada Eskrima and Hsing-I. Hard to find people with similar interests to my own. I think that both arts are similar in attitude and positioning. What do you think?

yeah, a selfaclaimed legend actually! the only & really only 'proof' he is good, is that he fought a man (william cheung) with a surprise attack! He beat him, because boztepe was prepared (via kernspecht & leungting) to take him to the ground with some grappling. Right, right, and right. I agree on all of them. Tacky was indeed his senior (I hope you understand what I had meant by it). Dan cought Bruce in the latter development of JKD whereas Tacky had already been with Bruce. Thus the differences in certifications. This is also why Tacky did and still does teach in Seatle, Dan taught in Chinatown, and James Lee in Oakland. Gonna check out your video. Thanks for responding.

I've uploaded an interview with Dan Inosanto in my profile. He says himself Bruce Lee wasnt impressed with it at all for combat but would work for the movies. Dan also refers to Taky as his senior. Don't forget Dan was already a high school teacher, he probably had the best ability to teach people and run a school compared to the others.

I know this is an old topic but I just happened to come across it. Dan was the only one to be certified by Bruce to Teach JKD with a 3rd rank. Tacky Kimura was certified in Jun Fan Gung Fu, and Ted never was certified in anything. You're right about the previous training part of it though. Also as far as the Kali thing, I agree that Bruce perhaps wasn't too enamoured with the training but maybe enough to put it in Enter the Dragon...

you're learning and practicing footwork no matter what your hands are doing. you can do both...weapons and empty hand defense. fact is if there is a knife gonna be used against me, id much rather have something other than just my body if possible. if its there its there, if its not then ill have to use my hands. but since you may find yourself in possession of these items, why not learn a bit about how to use them, and by doing that you are also learning how they can be used against you.

for sure, I'm in the UK police dont carry guns, we have a special task force that a specifically trained to use weapons. Normal officers just have sticks and mace. Criminals will use deadly force to escape arrest, so it makes sense to carry these to defend themselves. But you hear of cases where police have been killed with their own weapons too. You cannot live life carrying these things for just in case, maybe you won't have time to roll up a magazine, you've always got your body weapon.

i know lots of people who carry knives for work or something, same with screwdrivers..everyday objects. so are magazinges and umbrellas. you dont have to carry them all the time, but if you have em, that training will be helpful. obviously you cant pull a knife on an unarmed person, or just kill people. it doesnt have to be a machete lol and you dont have to necessarily stab and kill them. the point was, cops carry guns n sticks because they are more effective than fists.

OBLS - Original Bruce Lee Student No far from it, you don't carry sticks around with you, you wont have enough time to draw them out in an encounter, most of the strikes are not forward, they are slashing and arching, this does fit into the JKD structure. Only good thing is to learn how to fight unarmed against a stick fighter which is probably what Dan was doing with him. He didnt like the drills, and made up his own for the camera in ETD cave sequence.

Ich mache schon Jahrzehnte Kampfsport und muss sagen das dieses System sicher sehr effektive ist, jedoch meiner Meinung nach in keister weise Deeskalierent.Nur am rande 2:41 sollte er diesen Strich mit dem Messer durchziehn kommt der "Verteidiger" vor Gericht und muss sich wegen Todschlags verantworten. AUCH wenn es Notwehr war. Es rechtfertigt NICHT einen stich in die Halzschlagader.Da der Kammerawinkel ungünstig ist kann das natürluch auch ein Stich hinters Scglüsselbein sein.auch Tödlich;)

Yes its true that guns are more efficient and deadly than a weapon, but most people who train for SELF DEFENSE and walk around casually dont bring around guns -_-, youre also missing the point that martial arts are also sports. To Nikolo: Some movements are similar between escrima and chinese broadsword. The empty hand can be used to grab the wrist and strike to the head can be defended and counteres in very similar fashion (roof block). Many escrima movements can be applied to short, light swords of similar length.

I need some help. I have done my homework and I want to learn martial arts. I am very interested in Escrima(as it was featured in Bourne movies and I got very interested after that). 1st question: how good for self defense is it REALLY. Also where can I find a place to learn. I live in Tallahassee Florida and It is hard to research locations for this town(though its the capital we dont have much like Orlando or Miami).
