I used to drink with Grant at a bar in Brisbane called Rics in the late 90s. He was a REAL gentleman. He was incredibly well read, and a very gentle, unassuming man. I had spent quite a few sessions on the piss with him, before finally asking him: "what do you do?" He looked at me shyly, and said: "Umm.. I do Music." Such a modest man. And such a fantastic ear for a melody. I will never forget GW McLennan.

Thanks so much for posting. I can still recall hearing this song for the first time; it was so different from what I was listening to at the time (Minutemen, Replacements). This tune still has a haunting quality about it. Great song, great band.

Lindy is/was the drummer, she used to live behind me and practice the drums for a play/musical at the La Boite? theatre every day and I knew them as they were 3 memebers of different bands living in adjoining houses. After a gig in West End (again broken up by police)I was approached by a member of the GB and asked if I knew of a drummer. I said there was one but her talents were very limited, they really were, and they said they just after a drummer to do basic fill-in, not be noticed.

I saw the Go-betweens play a few times. Once in Glasgow 86/87?, I think it may have been the Tallulah tour thus 87. Amanda had joined and I recall being close enough to the front to be "joyfully" aware that she was wearing stocking or hold-ups. This song is beautiful. Oh, I doubt that the GBs would agree that the Smiths are overrated. There was some cross-influence. Over the same 3 or 4 years in the 1980s, the Smiths, by my reckoning, produced 30 pop masterpieces, and the GBs produced about 20. For which I'll always be grateful. The GBs didn't get the recognition of course.

i always liked the grainy look of this video and Weather With You, by Crowded House. perhaps CH were trying to capture a similar essence of Australia in the clip for WWY. that said, choosing between the two songs is always a tall order. this one has a special yearning nostalgia about it. i know the Go Betweens had been away from Oz for five years by the time they wrote this, so that possibly accounts for the nostalgia. a great advert for Oz. i'd love to visit.

That is really criminal that they were not world-renowned, please get your music out there it speaks so much more eloquently of a people and a culture than politics. However, a certain Ambassador of Australia to the US did give a recording of Cattle & Cane to all members of the US Congress as a song that captures a certain aspect of the heart of Australia. Whoa, now that is cool! Wish we had politicos like that.

What a truly great song, band, time, and yes it captures something very Australian in that era. I was a lucky American to have been there for the Paisley Movement and witnessed something very special. They are still contemporary, truly gifted and always in my heart. Thanks for this .... hit a very pleasant note! FYI the song was written about Brisbane.

Radio didn't play Australian music in the 80's it was all Phil Collins if you remember. A lot of good Aussie bands had to go to England to get support...The Triffids, Nick Cave etc.

This is a great clip! Very evocative of that time. I love the shots of the red rattlers clunking by. It's not polished, but it captures a jasmine scented, balmy summer in Sydney perfectly.
