chuck findley is the man,love whatever he plays, studio work, big band ,he covers it all and quite well, i would say he is one of my 300 favorite trumpet players. to all who comment about who is best they are all favorites because i love the horn first and foremost , and i can appreciate what all of the artists do with it, to please my ears. some more than others today, but tomorrows work will probably floor me, and oh yeah the blond at 3.41 is stellar

Randy Brecker is one cool son of a bitch for someone who has lived in his brothers shadow. I appreciate Arturo, but it all sounds the same, he can play over changes so well but it's so mundane. I have his books and he's technically amazing, his high chops are great, but boring solos.

Byron Stripling is crazy. Personally he is my favorite. Granted his double C wasn't there in this particular performance but man that cat can blow. he came to my college and tore the house down. This is definitely an off night for Byron. When I saw him his range was impeccable and in tune. From what I understand he plays on a large bore Strad and a 1C. Even when he played lead in Basie's Orchestra. But I guess when you're Byron's size a set up that big works pretty well.

Brass sections do not get any better than the Academy Awards orchestra. Was it Baptist, Findley, Bergeron and Luening? I know George Graham used to do it before Wayne. I once had the honor of playing second to your uncle Chuck. By the end of the concert my sound was breaking up trying to keep up with him on the bows music, when the chart had us alternating playing lead for eight bars. He's ferocious.

I remember this evening, ca. 1994, at Sweet Basil in New York - Art Farmer was playing, and Herb Alpert showed up to say hello during the break, and Art really didn't even seem to know who was. I was 22, and sitting at Art's table (how I managed that?). Herb's wife was there, too, and it was a little awkward, because Art said so little, or said it all with silence. I see Herb Alpert Foundation supporting Bill Moyers Journal on PBS now. I associate him with my granddad watching TV.

p.s. anyone catch bobby in this years accademy awards pit band? he's too humble to ever say ir, but I know it is a matter of great pride for him to have played in the band (under the legendary Bill Conti) in virtually every band section for the accademys for the last, wow, 20 years or so? I tell ya my heart fills with joy when I hear those perfectly executed solos and queues and watch from home everytime to see the brief facetime he gets every time.. Ok, enough gushing :) carry on :)

Bob Findley is a legend in my mind and he always made one thing clear to me.. there is a huge difference between 'Artists', 'Writers' and technitions.
