IN part two we divide the rope . This is a single rope rappell method. So you have to find the centre of the rope so that the end over the cliff are equal. confused? Don't blame you so watch the video. Remember rappelling is one of the most dangerous things that we do.

A mallion is a cheep steel d-ring shaped link used when rigging lower off points on top-rope and sport routes (google for "Mallion Rapide") i always carry one or two, and a spair length of 6mm chord so if i need to rig an anchor to retreat it is a lot cheaper than leaving a sling and a krab behind.

The edges of a standard bolt for one are just to sharp to pull the rope trough any number of times without it A) getting damaged B) getting stuck There really is no nylon on nylon issue if you think about it. The points of contact are stationary till you hit the deck and then pull the rope It is just the way it is done sorry unless they are specific rap bolts or rap rings

Why would you leave a sling up there. You could just as well get the main rope through the bolts. The bolts are in most cases rock solid and I would trust my life to even one of them (I never do however). The only disadvantage is that you don't have load balancing and in fact you increase the force on the bolts this way, but it shouldn't matter since they are really solid. Deals with the nylon on nylon problem as well.

Why would you leave a sling up there. Unless the bolts seem really unsafe, I would just guide the big rope through the bolts. Obviously that wouldn't give any load balancing and in fact would increase the force on the bolts, but those things are rock solid. Even in the rare occassion that one of them would break, the other one would still hold me. This is especially the case for a rapell where more or less the maximum force on the rope is your body weight*9.81.

stopper knots are a evil that are required. I have had problems with this in the past. Usually when I am not paying attention and I let a client pull the rope they can forget the knot. So far I have been able to deal with it. I have forgotten myself and had to climb a body lenth or two to untye the knot

Yeah ok :) I havent been doing so much climbing, mainly rappels and i only took one course in safety so im not so familiar with all the standards. I find myself catching tips and tricks just by luck and coincidence so i thought adding some thoughts would be great :) im not attacking or defending here ;) i also use a tree as a anchor so i can pull the rope down so i dont need to go up to get some gear or pull the rope up

I guess I take for granted that every one understands that this is not a top roping anchor. If you are backing off a big route in the rockies you may not have the gear to leave ten biners behind on the raps. You certianly are not wrong to add the biner but we have been rapping off slings for a 100 years now. The rope does not apply enough friction to cut in a rap scenario. Mike

I guess what I was demoing here is just a simple rap station. Not intended asa a top roping station so that others can climb with the rope running against nylon on nylon. You are a 100% correct in that sense. We can not afford to leave biners behind at every station though fixed metal stations are much more common today then a decade ago. Thank you for your input.

Great that u let everybody know why u do things like u do.pros and cons.I also got something to add. if possible, dont have metal against metal(twist = unnecessary tension on the carabineer)or rope against rope.(heat from friction can easely cut a rope in seconds) ofcource this is not always possible but something to think about.if i would setup this scene i would have added a carabineer between the loop and the main rope.But keeping it simple yet safe as possible is something to think about

often we will leave the sling around a boulder or a tree. Rapping is often what we do when things go wrong. On most pop routes the rap is fixed so you don't have to worry about leaving anything. The rope can burn the rap sling when you pull it down only cause it runs over the same spot

It was a false cottage, a façade that hid mine a building behind it. After I changed into overalls/helmet, I was driven into a car park, wrong turn? I love Rudess, but I still prefer Moore. He was a far far better songwriter. With Rudess, DT was reduced to merely trading solos between him and Petrucci. Imagine if Rudess had been with DT during "Images and Words"....."Learning to Live" would've been ruined by completely out of place solo tradeoffs between Petrucci and Rudess, for instance. I still love Rudess though, but Moore > Rudess overall.

Great tone, but the solo was a bit sloppy, especially for Petrucci. That version has great energy, but the song loses something without the chorus overdubs during Crimson Sunrise, so I still slightly prefer the original.

Back to what the other guys said, it's very hard to choose a "best" or most favorite time for a band of this magnitude because there are so many albums, so many different sounds they made, so many different songs mellow or heavy or psychedelic or just plain strange and then of course there is some material that is kind of bland, but this band is so good at what they do. A lot of fans like different eras for many reasons, I just like all their stuff and hopefully continue to do so. DT rocks

I can see where you're coming from - We all seem to like different things about the band. I'd find it hard to choose one era over the others, though. I really love Learning to Live/UAGM for the epic sound, but I also love the epic sound on Octavarium and Six Degrees and others, and i like the heavey sound on some and the mellow on others.... etc. It's all preference, so there's no right answer...

This is my first hearing of this band and they're not bad, a little too heavy maybe for my tastes. They remind me a lot of King Crimson. You may want to check them up as they are practically the creators of progressive rock. Check the song 21'st Century Schizoid Man especially.
