I am going to see The Pretenders tribute band, Talk Of The Town on Friday, Dec. 5. They are playing at Frank Cariola's Sundance in Rocky Point, NY. The lead singer Mary Beth, looks like and sounds like Chrissie. Its scary. Thats 60 mile drive from Manhattan (90 mns). The Police band , Invisible Sun are also playing that same night.

No,I have never heard of quadruple tonguing. Flutter tonguing produces a completely different type of sound, as does slurring, which doesn't even use your tongue at all. Flutter tonguing produces the "growl" that we tend to associate with jazz music. Fluttering doesn't produce distinct notes and is not used to differentiate notes. That is double tonguing. That's what he's doing. Maybe tuba players do something different, but that's because you're all from another planet.

Yeah, pretty much you can double tongue to a point, and after that, you have to slur or flutter tongue or something. By then, the individual notes don't matter though. People like to say "Quadruple Tonguing" a lot. I really don't know why. It's one of those mythical things - like Sasquach...

i have never heard of "quadruple tonguing". that's the dumbest thing i've ever heard. there's no reason for it. there's double and triple. how you pronounce your syllables all depends on the placement of your tongue. for some ta-ka works the best, and for some da-ga works the best. some musicians double tongue so fast, that anything faster and there'd be no distinction of individual notes.

i agree with the quadruple tounging, however you're wrong about the syllables for double and triple. it mainly depends on your native language, spanish and enlgihs speakers may find D-G easy, however french and italian speakers might find T-K much simpler. T-K is not improper, infact the american horn quartet uses it

As a classical trumpet player who used to be a lead trumpet player I have something to say. They are not trying to play legit jazz, in my profession we call it "dorky orchestral swing". It is just the way it evolved and it is actually difficult to do after playing so much "real" jazz. It is sort of like when composers use a traditional song in romantic music, similar melody but not nearly the same style.
