If she was honestly so dim-witted to ask that question she definitely isn't going to unerstand any sort of logical rebutle.

Your realization is right on the mark, something that I've realized recently as well. Unfortunately it will be met with christian critisim and literalism that defies belief. The amount of actual "sheeple" out there is disheartening and disturbing. One thing I've also noticed, they have an answer for EVERYTHING. My favorite, check out "diabolical mimicry"....that one's great!

Religion is great, it gives dumb people a chance to feel smug and clever about something.

Keep fighting for logic, order, and reason. If we can fight for these things without a single one missing, we can save humanity from iteself.
By: bencubed. on 01 Dec 08, 20:19:04
Listening to creationists on this site for sometime now, I have observed a constant common denominator of the willingness by theists to engage in deceit to others and to themselves. I can honestly say this realization has been something of a surprise considering the so-called moral 'high-road' theism historically proclaims. The conclusion I am increasingly coming to is that the indoctrination into mythology results in a corruption of ethical committment to truth and honesty. What irony.

So, true. I have spent years trying to find a religion or belief system that didn't lie, cover up the truth, get angry cos I ask questions etc, then one day i discovered I was an atheist.

"Breaking the Spell" The God Delusion and God is not Great I have read. I own the end of faith. Will get to this book soon. "Thankfully I never believed in a religion." Virgin mind? I'm jealous.
By: DarSpar. on 01 Dec 08, 19:39:03
Richard Dawkins is so great. Amzing guy, and his books are so brilliant. Proud to be atheist.
By: TheLogicalTheist. on 01 Dec 08, 19:34:45
"The concept of eternity, or at least vast time is what allows the rational mind to accept the progression of an uninhabitable planet into one capable of sustaining life." I agree. I think. :( Infinite regression has to be the state of things. I am a fan of theoretical physics that explores the possibility of a multi-verse. Something after nothing does not compute.
By: pikacht. on 01 Dec 08, 19:31:59
"It truly is a mind virus. The more absurd it becomes to believe a thing, the stronger one's faith." Yes. Wasn't it Daniel Dennett who describes this incredibly well in his great book "Breaking the Spell, Religion as a Natural Phenomenon"? Can't remember now. There are also great talks by him here on youtube. "Think back to the days of your indoctrination. How often did you fear 'losing your way'?" Thankfully I never believed in a religion.
By: yes0genesis. on 01 Dec 08, 19:31:37
Your geographic upbringing pretty much determines what religious belief you will hold. Right there and then you know that these are not the beliefs of the individual, but merely what they were raised to believe, aka brainwashed.
By: TheLogicalTheist. on 01 Dec 08, 19:31:03
"You guys have fun!" Goodnight and ahh...Jehovah bless...or kill...or incite to kill...or destroy the world...well...you know the guy.
By: bencubed. on 01 Dec 08, 19:30:25
The concept of eternity, or at least vast time is what allows the rational mind to accept the progression of an uninhabitable planet into one capable of sustaining life. This simply makes sense, especially in contrast to the notion of spontaneous creation put forward by religion.
By: izar1234. on 01 Dec 08, 19:24:49
Sad, isn't it? Okay, I've had enough of this for today! I'm in too good of a mood to get depressed. You guys have fun!
By: TheLogicalTheist. on 01 Dec 08, 19:21:35
"Nothing is more pernicious than being brainwashed by those you love and trust. That's one way that cults" We must trust our guardians. I remember sitting in the church and watching all the adults talk to the air as though invisible people talked back to them. I thought "this must all be true. Why else would so many adults gather here each week to say it is?"
By: TheLogicalTheist. on 01 Dec 08, 19:18:59
"Normally people get indoctrinated with this as young children before they can help it and then it's too late..." Yes. But never underestimate the specific dynamics of faith. The more it is threatened, the stronger it becomes. It truly is a mind virus. The more absurd it becomes to believe a thing, the stronger one's faith. Think back to the days of your indoctrination. How often did you fear "losing your way"?
By: izar1234. on 01 Dec 08, 19:13:50
"Normally people get indoctrinated with this as young children...." As I did. Which makes it all the more difficult to discard. Nothing is more pernicious than being brainwashed by those you love and trust. That's one way that cults operate.
By: pikacht. on 01 Dec 08, 19:09:00
"How could anyone willingly surrender their rational minds to such nonsense is the best question of all." Normally people get indoctrinated with this as young children before they can help it and then it's too late. Once you actually believe this kind of stuff it's very hard to get out of the circular reasoning since you actually *do* believe in things like literal heaven and literal hell. Hard to imagine, I know. Almost harder to imagine than eternity. ;)
By: bencubed. on 01 Dec 08, 19:06:17
'Punishment for eternity' Wow. Seems a bit extreme. 'Creationist logic' is an oxymoron. How could anyone willingly surrender their rational minds to such nonsense is the best question of all.
By: izar1234. on 01 Dec 08, 19:04:18
"One more time for good measure" LOL! Thanks for repeating it and thanks to pikacht for expressing it so well. What' ironic is that theists insist that their beliefs are not harmful and they couldn't be more wrong.
By: TheLogicalTheist. on 01 Dec 08, 19:01:21
"Because there are millions out there just like you who completely fold under any kind of pressure in a debate since their religion simply doesn't make sense, yet who refuse to let go of their superstitious beliefs that are obviously wrong and damaging not just to themselves but also to their environment." One more time for good measure. (Why is it that the atheists always come off as highly intelligent?)
