Have you ever tried SDRC-Ideas? Now that is shite! Inventor is just very basic. As a preference I would use SolidWorks for machinery, robots, modular design, mechanisms. For automotive/aerospace I prefer Catia V4 (that's right - OLD non-parametric Catia) as I've always found V5 awkward and non-intuitive. In its day (yearr 2000) Pro/E was the best parametric system - not any more but it still has some great features that the others haven't got - regen to tolerance limits stands out.

Actually, basic versions are more in the 15 000$/year range. A full version with all modules, including class A surfaces, FEA, enovia, etc. is about 120 000$/year. CATIA is mostly used by car and airplane manufactuerrs. I would suggest SolidWorks for less experienced (or rich) people.

Popularity isn't saying anything about the qualities of a software. Windows is the most widespread OS despite being one of the worst. Popularity has a lot of factors and thus can't always be easily explained. Another example is mp3. It is quite old, burdened with proprietary parts and doesn't deliver the best quality for the byte, yet it is still the most popular music format in use, despite better codecs are around that are really free.

Are you trying to be an industrial/concept designer or a class 1 surface designer? For ind/con design I would recommend Alias. For class 1 surface design, I would get training in one of the workbenches dicksham did not mention. ACA(Automotive Class A)available in pre r15 releases, or ISD(ICEM Shape Design) r 15 and later, both of which are/have been used by the auto/aero industry. Either way, autocad is a toy compared to v5.

Lock the compass always "Parallel to screen"; you can then draw /drag the curves (parallel to screen) in standard viewpoints... see Part 2of2 To change curvature, we use "Tension". A few days ago I visited a conference in a Danish city about engineering and design. I had some talk with a danish Catia reseller about the possibility of getting a student version with freeform ability. According to them it was coming in a matter of months. There is an add-on module that makes it possibly to import Rhino models into SolidWorks. In teory a imported surface should behave like it was created in Solidworks.

Do you need to import Rhino files into sw? Can sw modify Rhino surfaces? Sometimes, design engineers need to adjust surface curvature to cancel undercut, or make surfaces bigger to fix parts/mountings. Many companies today would work everything on the same platform. Consider CATIA, an upgrade of SW, although it's not cheap.

Also, by saying use 'surfaces then close them', aren't you going back to solids again? why not start with solids? i just installed it 2 days ago, looking good CAD program, but once i checked for shortcut button setup couldn't find it. maybe later i will try it again to find. this middle click and right click to rotate is very bad, i don't know my finger are bad or my mouse is small. but i cann't do it. if you know how to change these button for rotate can you just tell me where to change, i want it to be Shift+(Right Mouse click) to rotate. i tried the toolbars options couldnt find it or didnt work. thx

I am a design engineer working full time in CATIA V5 with experience using FEA software. CATIA modules for FEA are not so useful except for easy implementation. CATIA V5 can solve fluid flow using Fluent.But I am pretty sure they are buggy and program will be more head ache than anything atleast for couple of years more. I am planning on providing free videos.(FEA or CAD).You may be able to see my videos soon.

Well I have seen a catia video that demonstrates most abilities of Catia on the web. It showed some mechanical parts being anchored at key points and then bent and the resulting pressure displayed in a color graph. Liquids and gases would be cool, but i don't know if it can do it.

I will try to learn some meshes and pressure simulations. I understand meshes are used for FEA, how about pressure simulations, what's the application? Are we talking liquids, gases, solids or just pressure of parts against each other?

I use Catia every day at work-- (Engineer) Catia often needs to swap HUGE quantities of data to and from the disk, especially on the 32bit version. CATIA can gobble down the total 4gb memory space all by itself, afterall. :D Best suggestion I have for you is to "Dont click anything, and wait" I have a dual core Xeon, with an nVIDIA quadro as my workstation, and Catia takes it into a comatose state regularly. Patience is a virtue.

the surfaces are free to drag, free to delete, not following the tree structure of a traditional parametric model. they do have dimensions & coordinates, but many of them are not parametric-driven. if you find some surfaces bad in shape & difficult to modify, just delete them and rebuild, that will not affect other surfaces.

Hello, at first, this video is amazing!!! Great to show free style abilities in Catia. I have one important question: how can somebody modify it? My opinon is, that you can use this metode just for free design or fun... In real design you must using exact dimensions, follow the "tree structure" rules etc. But finaly this show is great!

That was really cool! I think it would be cool to see the same thing done with the Volvo In Line Six. (In The Land Rover LR2) It has profile switching valves that open at 3mm at Low RPM and 10mm at High RPM. By hydralic Actuated pins in the lifter Buckets and a Cam with many more Lobes
